Activities

In this section you will find ideas for activities to learn about forests.  Many involve field trips to your local forest.  The activities have been divided according to the subjects they cover.  Often though an activity will cover more than one subject.

Ideas from Ireland

Visit www.coillte.ie/learn_about_trees/index.htm for ideas from the Irish Learning About Forests programme.  Here you will find materials to support primary school teachers with projects on trees.  These projects are part of the Social, Environmental and Scientific syllabus.  Materials are available in pdf format in 5 modules for Infants, First & Second Classes, Third & Fourth Classes, Fifth & Six Classes and there is additional interesting information on trees.  There are worksheets and supporting guidelines for teachers.  Get ideas for field trips, learn how to press leaves and use them in various ways, read poems and do practical work on furits and seeds.  Older classes can learn about ecology, food chains, nutrient recycling, pollination, competition and adaptation, while practical activities include tree planting and making a nature trail.

Please send any ideas you may have for forest activities to us so they can be added to this section.
