Themes

Working on forest themes is a means of organising information and working together in the Learning About Forests project. This idea was discussed by project participants in Helsinki in September 2001.  A theme can provide some common ground and a focus or framework for Learning About Forests projects in different countries.

Various themes were proposed:  Forest Ecosytems; Endangered Species; Fire; Forest Myths; Action Projects, eg. Tree planting, Restoring a Park; Deforestation; Forest Trails; Life Cycle Study of any forest product; Forest Celebrations, eg, weeks, days, fairs; Forest Industries; Forest Professions; Paper Making; Forest Products; and Learning about History through Forests, Forest Fires and Bird Migration.

Work in each of these themes by schools should cover all aspects of a forest including ecological, economic and socio-cultural aspects.  It was proposed that we work with the theme of Forest Myths as our first Learning About Forests project theme.  Of course schools could choose to work on other themes but it was felt that if we try to work on one theme this might promote useful international interaction.  The materials could be compiled into a resource for teachers, and in this way, as we work with various themes, we could build up new materials for teachers available on the Learning About Forests website.
The themes will change every six months.  See our first and second themes below: Forest Myths and Forest Laws & Codes.  You can also start thinking about the current theme now.  Please send your contributions so they can be compiled and added to the new theme.

Schools do not have to work on the current theme.  You can also choose from past themes or from the list of possible future themes above.
